I recently traveled to Jamaica on a missions trip. While there I, seeing as I have a passion for children (I want to be a pediatric doctor), spent most of my time with the children. This young girl has seven siblings, non of which come from the same father. Due to the overwhelming poverty there, women become dependent on a man simply to be able to survive. For the men, their entire worth is based upon how many children he was "fathered". One man may boast 11 while one may boast 40. Once the woman has the child, she not only is dependent on a man to support herself, but her children as well. It's a horrible viscous cycle. Most of this young girl's siblings lived with their fathers while she, her mother, and her eldest sibling, a 8 year old girl, live in a small 10 by 10 house made up of trash tin and rotting wood. The Jamaica you google and see for in vacation is hiding the country's true colors. The whole country is in devastating poverty everywhere. Even in the tourist area (Montego Bay) shows the poverty everywhere you turn. Pray for the people of Jamaica and don't take for granted what you have. Even what is considered poverty for us does not even touch on the people of Jamaica's norm.
